Are you prepared if something happens to you?

In today’s blog post, I want to talk about a topic that no one wants to talk about but that I feel is Really important!!

No one ever wants to think about what would happen if they pass away or when they pass away.

It’s not a fun subject to dwell on, however I do think that it is very important to take some time out of our busy schedules and make sure that we have a good life insurance policy in place just in case anything were to happen to us.

I totally understand that it is SOO easy to think “Well I am still young” or “I have plenty of time to deal with that later on.” or “I will for sure get that all set up later on when I have more time, but I am really busy right now.”

Or you might be thinking “Well, I will take care of that when I am in my 50’s or 60’s…..for sure I will get something set up then….” but realistically we Never really know when our time is going to be over.

We can be eating good and exercising and doing ALL the right things! And then BAM!!! Some drunk driver hits us and then it’s over! We can be here one minute and gone the next.

I mean…..not to be morbid or anything, but the reality is that you can’t just think “Oh, I’m really healthy and I am really careful, so nothing is going to happen to me.”

I know it can be really easy to think that, but I just want to point out that sometimes things happen that are completely out of our control and we would have never imagined them to happen, but these things do happen.

3 years ago, my nephew Amir passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly and he was only 17 years old. Absolutely NONE of us expected that to happen, but it did. And words can not even begin to explain how traumatic and shocking that was for us to have lost him, and especially to lose him so suddenly!

Amir McKenzie

I mention about Amir to help you realize that it doesn’t matter how old you are. The harsh truth is that tomorrow is never guaranteed and so we need to cherish every day that we have and we also need to be prepared just in case something unexpected happens to us.

When my two older kids, Gabriella and Elijah were little, I didn’t have any life insurance at all. It just wasn’t something that I ever really thought about. I had Gabriella when I was 21 years old and I had Elijah when I was 23 years old, and so I was still Really young and I just wasn’t thinking about getting anything set up for if something happened to me.

It wasn’t until Isaiah was born, when I was 38 years old, that I finally got a life insurance policy for myself set up.

Isaiah Tahri

Actually, it wasn’t until I found out that Isaiah had special needs and then it really got me thinking like “Oh my goodness! If something happened to me, like who would take care of Isaiah?”

And it really made me start to feel nervous because I got to thinking that I wouldn’t want to ask someone to be his caretaker and then they have to stress about how they are going to try to juggle working, to bring in money as well as be able to take care of him, because as I have mentioned on other podcast episodes…..Isaiah is not able to walk, talk or feed himself, so he requires 24/7 care.

And so I went and got a life insurance policy and a very good one and fortunately because you know they do your blood pressure and weight and urine and all that stuff. They test for everything…..right?

And because I have never drank alcohol or smoked or done drugs...or anything like that and so I scored at the best level possible and so the good part of that is that for me to get really great life insurance, it was like at the best rate possible.

But, even if you're not really that healthy, it is still something that you really want to get in place, like regardless of what the pricing is because you definitely want to have something in place.

So anyways,....getting back to when Isaiah was born and I found out that he had special needs, I went ahead and got a life insurance policy for me set up so that the person that I put in charge of taking care of Isaiah….just in case something happened to me…..then I felt good knowing that if anything DID happen to me, that they wouldn’t have to struggle with trying to figure out how to take care of him, which is a 24/7 job and try to figure out how they would go to work and bring in money.

So again, I know that this is something that most people really don’t want to talk about but I do want you to seriously consider, if you don’t already have a life insurance policy in place, please get a life insurance policy in place this week.

Don’t put it off for later or think “Oh, I have plenty of time” or think “Oh, nothing is going to happen to me.” because like I said….. The reality is that we NEVER know when our time will be up!!

And instead of trying to put a lot of unnecessary stress on our loved ones, should something happen to us, we can take care of that really quickly and easily by just getting a life insurance policy set up that covers everything and by also having a will in place.

So that way everything is clearly outlined.

Now, just to clarify, so that there is no confusion.

I do not sell life insurance nor do I do wills. I don’t offer a service that offers setting up either of those things.

I am just trying to encourage you to find someone that can help set this up for you because it is SOO important.

SO, the thing is, IF you don’t have something set in place and something happens to you, it puts an incredible amount of stress on the loved ones who are left picking up the pieces trying to organize your funeral and setting up a GOFUND me and stressing about taking care of everything that they now all of a sudden have to deal with, not to mention that they are still grieving your loss. I have seen this happen first hand before….on more than one occasion.

This is why I am bringing it up even though I know that it is a sensitive topic. I bring it up because I Really think that it is SOO important and it’s not that much money!!

I mean, if you look at the big picture, it’s not like you need a policy that is a million dollars or even $500,000. You just need something in place that would, you know, make things so much easier for your loved ones for at least 5 years or 10 years or whatever you feel comfortable with.

So wrapping this up, I really do hope that if you don’t already have a life insurance policy in place yet, that you will get one put into place this week. And on that note, if you don’t currently have a will in place, you should also get that set up as soon as possible as well.

Having both of these things all set up ahead of time is very important and it allows things to go SOO much smoother if -- heaven forbid -- something unexpected happens to you.
